Sport in Summer Term 2016

P1040408

The Cheltenham Summer Athletics event is over for another year and we are so proud of our Oakwood teams. Over 40 children from Y3-6 participated in a number of events: long distance, sprints, relays, throwing and jumping, over 2 evenings. We competed against 16 other schools and came 7th overall. All of our teams and individuals were outstanding in their effort and support of each other on the night and we are immensley proud of each and every one of you. Lots of children and teams came within the top 8 in the finals and gained us points but a special mention goes to our medal winners.

1st place, Y5 girls long distance, 600m: Sophie Sharpe

1st place, Y4 boys sprint: Scott Bedford

3rd place, Y4 girls relay: Summer O'Dea, Leah Pockett, Lizzie Bamber and Sarah-Anne McCarthy

3rd place, Y4 boys relay: Scott Bedford, Rory Hopton, Craig Hannis and Nathan Graves

3rd place, Y5 boys sprint: Bailey Surman

Well done to you all!

Federation Sports Day

Sky TRY Rugby League

A number of children from Years 3 and 4 have been attending a Rugby League Club provided by Chelt All Golds. They have had a great 6 weeks and are looking forward to their festival at The Folly on Monday 18th July.

Heidi's Heroes

We have been supported for a second year by the charity, Heidi's Heroes, which has enabled a number of Year 5 and 6 children to participate in an intensive swimming scheeme for an entire week. This will culminate in a celebration swim and presentations at The Lido on Monday 18th July. All of the children have really enjoyed their sessions and were even brave enough on Friday to attempt jumping off the diving boards.

Multiskills

Lyle

Classes 1, 2 and 3 have all participated in Multiskills sessions organised by School Sport Network. The children, and staff, all had a fantastic time. Above is a picture of Lyle, receiving his award for The School Games value of 'Honesty'. Well done!

Pittville Cluster Festivals

As always the events organised by Mr Nicholls and run by the Sports Leaders at Pittville have been a huge success. Unfortunately due to poor weather and event clashes only two of the Year groups were able to attend. However, Year 2 enjoyed a fantastic morning of Tennis and Year 3 enjoyed an amazing Athletics Event.

Rounders

Mrs Godsell and Mrs White took a Rounders team to St. Edwards Junior School to compete in the Level 2 Rounders Event. They played a number of other teams and demonstrated some fantastic throwing, catching and team work skills.

Panathlon

Mrs Haddon and number of other staff members took a team of 8 children to the Level 2 SEND Panathlon, in Cheltenham. The children participated in a range of activities and had a fantastic time. They were then invited to the Level 3 SEND County Finals Panathlon at Hartpury. The same team again represented Oakwood and were excellent ambassadors for the school demonstrating the School Games Values of: Self-belief, Determination, Passion, Team work, Honesty and Respect.

Cricket

Mrs James has spent numerous lunchtime sessions working with our Cricketers. She has taken boys, girls and mixed teams to a number of events this Summer. The teams were all outstanding in representing the school and the boys team only just missed out on a place in the semi-finals. Well done to you all!

Tag Rugby Tournament

Mr Ibbetson took his Tag Rugby Team to compete at the Tournament at Newlands, just after Easter. The team played a number of games throughout the day, scored a number of TRYs and demonstrated some fantastic teamwork. Well done!

Kin Ball

After some staff training in Kin Ball, a giant ball which involves teams really working together to gain points, many of the teachers have been keen to try this out with their classes.

Below is Year 2, having lots of fun with the giant Kin Ball.
