Autumn Term 2016-17
Squash sessions with University of Gloucestershire
The students from the University of Glos, under the guidance of professional Squash player Nathan Lake who is ranked 74 in the world, have just delivered 6 sessions of Squash to children from Classes: 5, 6, 10, 11 and 12. Some of the children involved received the coaching last year and have really enjoyed the opportunity to build on their skills. Those new to the sport have also really enjoyed themselves; developing new skills and having lots of fun.
Next week a number of children from each of the classes involved will attend a morning sessions with the Students at Leisure@ Cheltennham and have the opportunity to experience a real Squash court.
Sports Ability
8 children have been selected from Y3-Y6 to participate in five Sports Ability sessions across this academic year. The first session is tomorrow and we look forward to hearing how it goes.
Inclusive Sports in Class 9
Class 9 have received 5 sessions of Inclusive Sports as part of our School Sport Network Membership. They have tried out; Boccia, seated volleyball, goalball and skittled goalball. I know that they all had a fantastic time learning the new skills and games which they have all been able to participate in. Mrs Perring-Wood has also been building on their skills and giving them lots of opportunities to practise them in sessions, since the coaches have finished coming into school.
Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
The Year 3 classes have received some OAA sessions, as part of our School Sport Network Membership. They have had a great time working together to solve the challenges set them each week.
Running
Eight children participated in the Cheltenham half Marathon in September, alongside Mrs Jacobs, Mrs Perring-Wood and Miss Day. They had been running parts of the marathon on the school grounds since June and ran the final mile at the Racecourse on the day with everyone else.
Well done to all of you- a tremendous achievement!
After the success of the Marathon run, Mrs Jacobs decided to get us involved with the Cross Country events held in Cheltenham this year. Eight children have run at the two events so far and there are two more to come in the Spring term. We are really proud of all of you who have participated.
Sports Hall Athletics
A team of 18 children from Year 6 participated in the Sports hall Athletics event, competing in a range of team and individual running, throwing and jumping events. The children all gained points during their events which added together to generate an overall school score. The children had a fantastic morning and all demonstrated the skills of teamwork and respect for all participants. Well done, Team Oakwood!
