Reading
Our Vision
At Oakwood, we believe that reading should be an accessible and inspiring journey for every child. Our vision is to nurture confident, enthusiastic readers who develop a genuine love of reading that extends far beyond the classroom. We are passionate about ensuring that every child experiences the joy and power of reading for pleasure.
We recognise that reading is the gateway to the entire curriculum and a vital life skill. With determination and high expectations, we are committed to ensuring that all children develop confidence and belief in themselves to become capable and resilient readers. By fostering a culture where every child feels supported, challenged and inspired, we empower our pupils to succeed not only in school but throughout their lives.
To achieve this, every Phonics lesson follows a clear and purposeful structure of revisit, teach, practise and apply. This allows children to consolidate prior knowledge while building new skills with confidence. Through careful monitoring and regular assessment, we ensure that any child who may experience difficulties is identified early. Targeted support and intervention are then implemented so that every pupil is given the opportunity to succeed and continue their reading journey with confidence and self-belief.
In KS2, as a class we explore a range of texts from different genres through 3 weekly sessions on each text; Vocabulary, We Go and You Go sessions. Pupils develop confidence and fluency with the text through echo reading, choral reading and paired reading, focusing on the ‘6 Ps’, pace, punctuation, pause, power, pitch and passion. Teacher’s model fluency and directly teach comprehension skills and how to answer questions based on the text, which pupils then practice independently.
Intent:
Pupils will:
- Read with accuracy, speed, confidence, fluency and understanding.
- Use their reading skills effectively to access learning across the curriculum.
- Develop a life-long passion for reading and books.
- Speak confidently about texts, sharing ideas and discussing books with both peers and adults.
- Build strong foundations through systematic and progressive phonics teaching, developing secure phonetic knowledge and understanding.
- Strengthen comprehension, critical thinking and reflective reading skills, enabling them to engage deeply with a wide range of texts.
- Show determination in their reading, persevering with challenging texts and developing resilience when faced with unfamiliar vocabulary and ideas.
